East Gate of Cypress Cemetery

East Gate of Cypress Cemetery

Prior to expansion in the early 1900's and prior to the existence of the "Annex", the east gate was Cypress Cemetery's main entrance. The view in the historic postcard above shows the access roads that existed within the original section of the cemetery. Also seen is Lady Fenwick's tomb in the grassed area through the open gate and the grove of pine trees that lined the roads heading back toward South Cove.

East Gate Today

In the present day view taken from approximately the same angle (right), the old cemetery roadways - now walking paths - can't be made out as they are covered by grass. The modern cemetery roadways exist entirely within the newer Annex section located behind the Yale Boulder property which was added to the cemetery in the early 1900's (not seen in this view). In addition, many of the pine trees that existed in the early days are now gone. It is presumed that earliest colonists would likely be buried underneath the paved portion of College Street seen in front of the East Gate, in that this area was said to be part of the original burial ground.
